Black Grouse lek

The Black Grouse/Black Cock (tetrao tetrix) along with their close cousins the Ptarmigan (lagopus muta), the Red Grouse (lagopus lagopus) and the mighty Capercaillie (tetrao urogallus) are truly brilliant particluraly when they are lekking. This is a sight that is a joy to behold, posturing, hissing, spitting and full on violence with blood and feathers flying everywhere. Nature Nuts offer the opportunity to see the beautiful Black Cock strut his stuff.

Also on site are the gorgeous Short Eared Owls, Long Eared Owls and Tawny Owls. The latter two are less easy photographed but the former is generally quite obliging.

Other regular sightings are Brown and Mountain Hares, Pippits, Wheatear, Curlew, Cuckoo, Larks and deer, primarily Roe but Red and Fallow can also be seen.

Snipe drumming, Kestrels hovering and Buzzards soaring are almost a guarantee, but we also have Hen Harriers, not so likely to spot but they are occasionally seen if you keep your eyes peeled.

Please note, We will NOT be leaving the vehicle so as not to disturb the birds, noise must be kept to a minimum as well as movement. These birds are very special and as much as they are close to the road and used to vehicles, I don't want to wreck the lek by disturbing the birds. Once they go after being upset, they are gone for the evening.
