Nature Nuts

A wee beaver tour 24-05-16

If there is one thing I really enjoy and take pride in, it's taking people to see my beaver family. This particular evening I was joined by a really lovely group consisting of Yvonne, her pal Francesca and her son Connor. We started a wee bit late on a lovely early summer evening, and arrived at the river around 1930ish. Young Connor was on best behaviour though he did take particular delight, along with the rest of us, in liberating a few strawberries on the walk to the river!! It was a magnificent arrival in all truth, the sound of the riverside was truly magical (despite Gordon cutting his grass!!!), warblers, thrushes and robins singing their evening song, with the odd addition of a grumpy wren, thrawn blackbird and a glorious yellowhammer or two. After waiting a wee while, mum gave a brief showing

If you look at her hinder end it is obvious she is still carrying her precious cargo. She gave birth last year to 3 kits on the 24th of May so we were kind of hoping we wouldn't see her tonight but she can only be a few days away from delivering the next generation.

Anyway, we had quite a few sightings of ripples coming from various burrows but unfortunately no shows until we got this one of dad. Initially I thought he was delivering feeding/bedding to his better half, but no, he disappeared into a burrow and munched it up himself.

Things quietened down and we decided to go to Bamff to see the dams and lodges. My group were really interested in the beaver workings and Connor managed to get a beaver chewed stick and some beaver chippings. It was actually quite funny when I suggested to him we get some chips, the groups ears perked up and bellies were heard rumbling. I was sorry to disappoint them as I could only offer a handful of large bits of sawdust, not really appetising.

So, we had just what I needed, beaver sightings with two lovely girls and a very enthusiastic future Attenborough in Connor. Thanks guys, you lifted my spirits.
